The belief behind this is that there is a vein which runs from the left ring finger and goes up straight to the heart. Although there are no medical evidences to point towards any vein as such, the trend of wearing wedding rings on the left hand is pretty well established.

There is however some cultures which prefer the right hand ring finger for the purpose.  Particularly amongst the Latin countries, left is considered to be the bad-luck side of a person. That is why some places, particularly the Latin countries use the right hand for wearing the wedding ring. Before you marry, clarify the tradition followed by your family.
